January will be the month of Writers App; at least for me and my daily developer work. Since October 2014 I’m working hard on a complete new version of a writers ultimate notepad – the Writers App. Now, in this first month of the new year, I plan to finalize this version and to implement all the features I’ve put on my todo list. So hopefully – when everything works as it should – I’ll release Writers App 2.0 in February 2015. Are you interested in more information? Alright, let’s take a first look at this major update!
Writers App is the app project I’m working on for years now. It was the first app I’ve published on the iOS App Store and the app that started my app developer career. And – oh man! – that was in February 2011! Time is running fast, isn’t it? Since the first release so many updates have come and I’ve learned so much about app development and the wishes of my customer for such an app like Writers App. And now is the time to put all my knowledge and all the things you love of Writers App and you want to see in it into one big new major release; Writers App 2.0 is as good as done and will hopefully be released in February on the App Store.
Redesign from the ground
First of all, Writers App 2.0 has finally a complete (yes, I mean it) new and fresh design. Not only does this new design take care of all the new iOS devices like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It will make the app much more user friendly and more intuitive to use. Furthermore it will give you so much more information with one look where you currently need to switch between several views in the current version of Writers App. How this looks like on an iPhone 6 is shown in the following screenshot:
Of course the design may change within the last development steps in some details, but this is what the current development version of Writers App 2.0 looks like. As you can see, the main feature stays the same: You can add several informations to your story and add chapters, characters, places as well as items (!) and fill them with life. But instead of seeing all the things you can add to a story, you now only see the ones you’ve actually added to it. Therewith you get a perfect overview of the really important information; everything else is out of sight. And as soon as you tap on one of those elements (like the plot or the synopsis) you see all the details for the appropriate element in full screen (as already known from the current version of Writers App BASIC).
Notes (the colorful way!)
Another big improvements is about notes…
As you can see from the screenshot above you can now add as many notes to an element (regardless if it’s the story, a chapter, a character etc.) as you want and as you need. And to differentiate between them as easy as possible, you can choose between three different colors for every note (more colors are may to come 🙂 ). So the design and the look of creating a note has also changed with Writers App 2.0, as you can see here:
BASIC goes PRO!
I did my best to optimize the UI so that you gain the best user experience while using the app. The complete app is rewritten in Apples new programming language Swift and will come in two different versions; the already known and available BASIC version as well as the completely new PRO version. More about those two versions and their differences will be revealed in a following blog post. But there’s one thing you can be sure off: All users of the currently available app Writers App BASIC will get the new design and all yet available features for free! The new PRO update (which will also be available as in app purchase within the BASIC version) will also come with brand new and great features which will extend the functionality of Writers App even more; stay tuned!
More exciting information of Writers App 2.0 will be revealed within the next weeks. You can’t imagine how excited I am to submit this update on the App Store as soon as the complete development work is done! 🙂 This will be an amazing release!
